Awards

The Science Education Resource Center (SERC) and our partners have won numerous awards for our work on improving education through projects that support educators. We work with educators across a broad range of disciplines and at all educational levels, with a particular emphasis on undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Teach the Earth - June 2019

The Teach the Earth web portal has been named among the Best Science Websites for Teachers by Twine, a connection tool for schools which lists some of the best free resources available on the web for science teachers.

Teach the Earth is the National Association of Geoscience Teacher's (NAGT) web portal to online teaching and professional development resources for geoscience educators. This portal supports teaching and learning about the Earth by providing online resources for K-12 and undergraduate educators in the geosciences and related fields. Resources include classroom activities, course descriptions and syllabi, information about pedagogical strategies, topical collections, and more.


CLEAN - 2017

CLEAN

The Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) was awarded Friend of the Planet by the National Center for Science Education. NCSE's Friend of the Planet award is conferred annually to people and organizations whose efforts to support NCSE and advance its goals have been truly outstanding.

CLEAN was also awarded the Excellence in Education award by the Goldin Foundation. This award is designed to recognize excellence, expertise, and achievement in education.

The Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) addresses the societal impacts of a changing climate by supporting educators and their students in teaching climate and energy topics effectively. CLEAN is co-lead by a team from the University of Colorado, Boulder, the Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. CLEAN stewards a collection of climate and energy science educational resources and supports a community of professionals committed to improving climate and energy literacy.

Genomics Explorer - January 2013

The Genomics Explorer teaching tool was awarded the January 2013 SciencePrize for Inquiry-Based Instruction .

An essay by Genomics Explorer PI Susan Singer appears in the Jan 25 issue. The IBI prize is awarded each month to an outstanding, inquiry-based science or design-based engineering education module.

The Genomics Explorer tool provides an interactive way for students to choose strategies for asking and addressing biologically interesting questions using a range of genomics tools.

The Geoscience Information Society named the Science Education Resource Center website as the winner of the 2012 Best Website Award.

The Best Website Award has been presented annually since 2002, given to websites that exemplify outstanding standards of content, design, organization, and overall site effectiveness.

The Science Education Resource Center, an office of Carleton College, works to improve education through projects that support educators. The office has special expertise in effective pedagogies, geoscience education, community organization, workshop leadership, digital libraries, website development and program and website evaluation.

The Earth Exploration Toolbook - September 2011

The EET website has been awarded the September 2011 SciencePrize for On-line Resources in Education award by the journal Science.

An essay about EET by PIs Tamara Ledley and LuAnn Dahlman et al, appears in the Sep 30 issue. The SPORE prize is awarded each month to an outstanding project that brings freely available online resources to bear on science education.

The Earth Exploration Toolbook is comprised of activities called "chapters" that give educators step-by-step instructions on how to access a scientific dataset and a data analysis tool, and conduct an analysis around an Earth science concept or issue.

The On the Cutting Edge website has been awarded the February 2010 Science Prize for On-line Resources in Education.

An essay about On the Cutting Edge by PIs Cathy Manduca, David Mogk, Barbara Tewksbury, R. Heather Macdonald, appears in the Feb 26 issue of Science. The SPORE prize is awarded each month to an outstanding project that brings freely available online resources to bear on science education.

The Geoscience Information Society chose On the Cutting Edge as the winner of the 2009 Best Website Award.

The Best Website Award has been presented annually since 2002, given to websites that exemplify outstanding standards of content, design, organization, and overall site effectiveness.

The NAGT On the Cutting Edge project helps geoscience faculty stay up-to-date with both geoscience research and teaching methods. The project provides professional development opportunities, resources, and opportunities for faculty to interact on-line and in person.

Starting Point - 2006

A paper by Starting Point staff Cathy Manduca, Ellen Iverson, Sean Fox and Flora McMartin was chosen as the winner of the 2006 Best Paper Award by the Best Paper Award Committee of the Geoscience Information Society.
